EMA replaced token-based prepaid metering at Fumba Town with a smart-metering platform that delivers tokenless mobile-money recharge, real-time monitoring, and offline-resilient operation for the developer CPS Africa and operator Town Operations Company.
In the token era, residents had to physically buy and key in recharge tokens, which meant queues and friction every time credit ran low. The operator had little real-time visibility into balances, consumption, or meter health, making losses and faults hard to detect. And because the system depended on connectivity at the point of sale, internet outages could interrupt the ability to keep meters topped up.
EMA deployed a smart prepaid metering network with estate-wide coverage across the development. Recharge is fully tokenless and tied to mobile money, while a central platform gives the operator real-time monitoring of balances and meter status, and an offline-resilient edge keeps recharge and metering working through connectivity gaps. The same platform runs electricity today and is ready to extend to water.
